Scope, method and limitations
Inclusion: An entry is included where reporting indicates that a person, institution, property or practice was targeted, restricted, disparaged or discriminated against wholly or partly because it was Muslim or was perceived to be Muslim. This covers physical violence, killings, mob action, demolitions, discriminatory policing and prosecution, hate speech by public figures, restrictions on religious practice and dress, economic exclusion, citizenship-related expulsion, and online abuse.
Dates: Where the date of the incident and the date of publication differ, the incident date is used and the reporting date is noted. Where only the reporting date is establishable, this is stated explicitly. Entries whose underlying events fall outside August 2026 are excluded, except where an August 2026 development (a death, an arrest, a court order) is itself the logged event; these are flagged.
Allegation: Most entries rest on complaints, FIRs, video evidence and journalistic reporting rather than judicial findings. Language throughout reflects that: ‘alleged’ is used where a claim is contested or untested. Inclusion is not a finding of guilt.
Limitations: This is a best-effort catalogue, not an exhaustive one. Systematic monitors recording every reported incident put the monthly national figure far higher: Siasat.com’s hate-crime desk logged 63 anti-minority attacks in July 2026 alone, an average of more than two a day. Small-town and vernacular-language incidents, and incidents that never reach English-language reporting, are structurally under-captured here. Several August incidents surfaced only through monitor aggregation with imprecise dating; these appear in Appendix A rather than the main chronology.
I. The month at a glance
Dominant patterns, August 2026
Kanwar Yatra as a vector of violence: The 2026 Kanwar Yatra ran from 30 July to 11 August and shaped the first third of the month. It produced the month’s most serious documented death – that of driver Azeem Ali – alongside the demolition of a Muslim-owned biryani shop, raids on non-vegetarian eateries, the rescheduling of the Urs-e-Ala Hazrat with a vegetarian-only order, the beating of an elderly man for carrying chicken, a man forced to touch pilgrims’ feet, and an FIR against a Muslim cleric who criticised pilgrim assaults. The pattern is consistent: violence by pilgrims, followed by legal action against Muslims.
Bulldozers against religious and educational institutions: August opened with the demolition of a prayer structure at a roughly 200-year-old Muslim cemetery in Mussoorie and closed with a Hindutva leader on video promising more of the same. The partial demolition of the 59-year-old Arabia Zia-ul-Uloom madrasa in Siddharthnagar on 18 August, which served some 350-400 children, was the month’s signal case. Aggregate reporting in late August counted at least 23 mosques, madrasas and Eid prayer grounds demolished across BJP-governed states in a 45-day window.
Citizenship, profiling and ‘push-backs’: Bengali-speaking Muslims were targeted as suspected foreign nationals in two distinct ways: mass detention (hundreds, by activists’ count around 900, in a single pre-dawn Bengaluru drive) and expulsion across the Bangladesh border despite documentary proof of Indian citizenship (Sahida Fakir). The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination described this on 25 August as ‘systematic and structural racial discrimination’.
Dress, worship and public religious expression: Hijab was contested on an Assam campus and at a Mumbai food festival; a ‘Ya Hussain’ flag led to three arrests in Deoria; mosque loudspeakers were removed in West Bengal without written orders; and Mumbai’s civic body banned bringing goats into housing societies for Eid slaughter.
Hate speech from office-holders: The month’s slurs came from serving constitutional functionaries and party leaders, not fringe actors: a Deputy Chief Minister on madrasas, a minister of state on Muslim votes, a former MP on ‘puncture repairers’, and a Hindutva outfit’s state chief on demolition as habit.
Institutional and monitoring developments: Three significant documentation events fell in August: the South Asia Justice Campaign’s finding that 44 Muslims had been killed in hate crimes in the first seven months of 2026; India’s first UN CERD review since 2007 (11-12 August) and its concluding observations (25 August); and USCIRF’s assessment that religious freedom in India continued to decline through 2026.

Prayer structure at 200-year-old Muslim cemetery demolished
Authorities demolished the janaza (funeral prayer) site at a nearly 200-year-old Muslim cemetery in Mussoorie. The demolition triggered protests that blocked the Mussoorie-Dehradun highway. The cemetery and its prayer structure had been in continuous community use; residents said no adequate process preceded the action.

Hindu groups allege Muslim man served as temple priest
Hindu organisations alleged that a Muslim man had been working as a priest at a local temple and demanded action. The temple management stated he had been employed only as a cleaner. The episode followed a familiar pattern in which the presence of a Muslim worker in a Hindu religious space is itself framed as an offence requiring redress.

BJP workers protested at a West Bengal restaurant over its halal-only meat sourcing, demanding explicit labelling and a jhatka option. The protest formed part of a wider campaign against halal certification that has been used to push economic boycotts of Muslim-owned and Muslim-supplied businesses.

Bail denied to Muslim journalist over a video first posted by a Hindutva commentator
A Chandigarh court denied bail to Hyderabad journalist Hassan Mohiuddin Siddiqui, accused of sharing a misleading video of the Prime Minister. The clip had originally been posted by commentator Madhu Kishwar, who faced no comparable prosecution. The asymmetry was cited by press-freedom advocates as evidence of selective enforcement.

Theatre activist beaten after being mistaken for a Muslim
Bengali theatre activist Subhankar Dassharma was stopped by a group of men who asked whether he was Muslim. He replied, ‘What if I am a Muslim? Isn’t this country also for Muslims?’ – and, refusing to disclose his religion, told them he was. He alleged they then beat him repeatedly about the eyes, head, ears and chest while chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’, tore his kurta and left him briefly unconscious. He was treated on 3 and 4 August for an eye injury and a perforated eardrum, and went public roughly a week later after abuse was directed at his sister online.

78-year-old acquitted after 33 years in Babri-era sedition case
A Special NIA Court acquitted 78-year-old Mohammed Naeem of all charges in a sedition case registered in January 1993, in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition. The court held that the prosecution had failed to prove the essential ingredients of the offences. Naeem faced proceedings from the age of 45 to 78; the acquittal is logged here as a documented instance of process-as-punishment.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said that madrasas produce terrorism, triggering a political row. The remark came from a serving constitutional office-holder and was made against a backdrop of ongoing madrasa demolitions and the state’s withdrawal of recognition from Kamil-Fazil degrees.

‘Puncture repairers and locksmiths’: BJP leader’s slur against protesters
BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri said that ‘puncture repairers and locksmiths’ outnumbered students at the Jantar Mantar protests, and claimed the crowd had been brought in from Jafrabad and Saharanpur. Both the occupational reference and the place names function as established anti-Muslim dog whistles in Indian political speech, recoding a student movement as a Muslim mob.

Writer Taslima Nasrin said that jihadis are produced in madrasas and called for government regulation of seminaries and a Uniform Civil Code. The All India Muslim Personal Law Board condemned the remarks on 6 August as ‘blatant falsehoods’ and an attempt to interfere in India’s internal affairs.

Non-Muslims appointed to Manipur Waqf Board
The Manipur government issued an order reconstituting the 8th Manipur Waqf Board with two non-Muslim members, among them BJP state president and MP A. Sharda Devi, under the amended Waqf Act. Waqf boards administer mosques, graveyards, madrasas and endowment land; until the 2025 amendment, all state board members were required to be Muslim. Protests followed on 21 August.

Urs-e-Ala Hazrat rescheduled and ordered vegetarian-only
The historic Urs-e-Ala Hazrat, one of north India’s largest Sufi gatherings, was rescheduled and directed to serve only vegetarian food, on the grounds that it coincided with the Kanwar Yatra. The order subordinated a long-established Muslim religious observance to the requirements of a Hindu pilgrimage.

Kanwar pilgrims attack school van carrying children
A van carrying primary school students was attacked by a group of men who were part of the Kanwar Yatra, in the Chowk police station area. The incident formed part of a documented run of Kanwar-related assaults on motorists, police and bystanders during the 2026 yatra (30 July – 11 August), the burden of which fell disproportionately on Muslims along the route.

Muslim man beaten to death by village mob over untested allegation
Md Emroz was surrounded at his home and beaten to death by hundreds of villagers after a missing minor girl returned and accused him of confinement and sexual assault. Police stated that the allegation against him remained unestablished and under investigation, and that the mob killing was being probed separately; several suspects were detained. The killing preceded any legal test of the accusation.

Death of Azeem Ali, beaten by kanwariyas after a road accident
Azeem Ali, a Muslim pickup-truck driver from Moradabad aged 24 (some reports 27), died at a Delhi hospital without regaining consciousness. On 31 July his vehicle had collided with a parked auto-rickshaw carrying kanwariyas near the Brijghat toll plaza; the pilgrims dragged him from his vehicle and beat him with a wooden stick. Video shows the assault occurring in the presence of a police officer. He left a wife, an infant son and a bedridden father. A counter-FIR for attempted murder was registered against Azeem himself on 3 August. Four accused – Lokesh Singh, Ankit Kumar, Manish Kumar and Shivam – were arrested on 13 August and a fifth, Daksh, subsequently; a murder charge was added under BNS s.103(1) and the weapon recovered.

Tracker: 44 Muslims killed in hate crimes in first seven months of 2026
The South Asia Justice Campaign’s India Persecution Tracker reported that at least 44 Muslims had been killed in hate crimes since the start of 2026 – 19 by state actors and 25 by Hindutva assailants – putting the year on course to become the deadliest since documentation began in 2022. For May-July alone it recorded 25 killings (15 by police and security personnel, 10 by Hindu extremist actors) across five states, the victims including an 11-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy. It also recorded 23 Muslim religious structures demolished in under two months across six states, and more than 1,000 Muslim homes, businesses and religious structures razed in at least 21 demolition episodes across eight states, taking the 2026 total above 3,000.

Woman pushed into Bangladesh despite documentary proof of Indian citizenship
Sahida Fakir, a 40-year-old Bengali-speaking Muslim woman, was picked up in Navi Mumbai and pushed across the border into Bangladesh as an alleged infiltrator. Her family produced her birth certificate, voter ID, PAN card and land records establishing that she was born in India and had lived there her whole life. She remained stranded in Satkhira while her husband and two sons stayed in India. She had, relatives said, stepped out to buy food.

Meta restricted access in India to an Instagram post carrying a report on Insha Mushtaq, the Kashmiri schoolgirl blinded by pellet fire in 2016. Delhi University dropped its long-running postgraduate paper on the Delhi Sultanate, along with several other history courses, from a newly notified syllabus. Sheikh Abdul Hafiz died after an alleged assault. Bulldozers raze most of a 59-year-old madrasa serving 350-400 children
At about 7 a.m., six bulldozers and roughly 100 police from five police stations arrived at the Arabia Zia-ul-Uloom (Maktab) madrasa, in operation since 1967-68 and spread over some 14,000 square feet. Within about two hours, seven rooms, a shop and roughly half the main hall had been demolished. Around 350-400 children were receiving Urdu-medium education there; the management said the madrasa was registered with the Waqf Board. Samajwadi Party MLA Sayyada Khatoon reached the site with party workers and demanded a halt; police barricaded the area and a scuffle broke out. The AAP’s UP unit called the action ‘unconstitutional’ and questioned when notice had been served; Congress leader Javed Ashraf Khan described it as an ‘open hate agenda against Muslims’ and sought Supreme Court intervention.

Kashmiri Muslim students pressured to vacate accommodation
Two Kashmiri students at the TRUBA Institute of Pharmacy, admitted under the Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme and living as paying guests at Shanti Homes Colony, Korand Gandhi Nagar, alleged sustained harassment and intimidation aimed at forcing them out because they are from Jammu and Kashmir and are Muslims. Their landlord was allegedly warned to evict them or face forcible entry. The students said they had become afraid to travel to college. The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association wrote to Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on 18-19 August; the state DGP directed the Bhopal Police Commissioner to intervene and police visited the residence and questioned those allegedly involved.

After a clash at a Faculty of Engineering students’ union general body meeting on the evening of 19 August, a mob linked to the ABVP and allied groups entered the campus around midnight on bikes, vandalised student union rooms and hostels, tore down and burned Left posters, and attacked CCTV control rooms. Several students were injured; police were present but did not immediately intervene. Logged as contextual: the attack targeted Left student politics rather than Muslims specifically, but it belongs to the same August escalation of Hindutva street power and followed the Prime Minister’s 15 August Red Fort warning about ‘dimagi Naxals’.

A Muslim woman councillor and her son were assaulted and subjected to religious abuse during a municipal corporation meeting. Her son, Hussain, said in a complaint to senior police officials that the violence began after the auditorium doors were closed; he had approached because his mother has health problems. He alleged that Ward 25 councillor Ruhi Singh verbally abused him, struck him on the head with a nameplate and that he was threatened with death, and that he was branded a ‘terrorist’ in front of police. Muslim students allege ABVP assault over hijab; college moves to enforce uniform
A clash broke out during a NSUI membership drive, held with the principal’s permission, after ABVP members objected to the presence of hijab-wearing Muslim students. A Muslim student said ABVP members first argued that religion had no place in an educational institution, then raised ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans, questioned why students wore hijab, suggested it would lead to prayers on campus, snatched a student’s hijab, pushed students and beat them; male students were also assaulted. She noted that Muslim students had not objected to Hindu ceremonies held on campus, and rejected the claim that earphones were concealed under hijabs, saying the college could introduce checking procedures instead. Several students were injured. On 26 August the principal said the college would enforce its uniform code. ABVP filed a police complaint alleging it was being wrongly blamed. On 27 August an NSUI protest led by MLA Zubair Anam was blocked by police, leading to a scuffle.

UN CERD: Bengali-speaking Muslims face ‘systematic and structural racial discrimination’
The UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination published its concluding observations on India. It said it was gravely concerned by reports of large-scale violations by law enforcement officials against ethnic and ethno-religious groups, Indigenous and Tribal Peoples, Scheduled Tribes and Castes, particularly Dalits, and non-citizens – including racially motivated violence, excessive use of force, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary and prolonged detention without due process, torture, ill-treatment and sexual violence. It criticised the implementation of the NRC in Assam, found that Bengali-speaking Muslims are subjected to systematic and structural racial discrimination, flagged racial profiling in police stops and identity checks, noted hate speech by politicians and public figures targeting Rohingya and Bengali-speaking Muslims, and urged India to address hate crimes and refrain from collective expulsions.

Mumbai civic body bans goats in housing societies for Eid slaughter
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation banned bringing goats home for slaughter in housing societies, following a Hindutva protest during the previous Eid. A fact-finding report by the Centre for Study of Society and Secularism, published earlier in August, had documented how a longstanding dispute over temporary goat enclosures at a Mumbai housing complex before Eid al-Adha was escalated by VHP and Bajrang Dal members from outside the society, who brought a pig onto the premises as a deliberate provocation. The civic order effectively converted that provocation into policy.
