Scope and Method
This log records incidents of anti-Muslim violence, humiliation, discrimination, demolition, speech-policing and official
measures reported in India between 1 and 30 July 2026. Entries were compiled from Indian and international outlets
including Maktoob Media, The Observer Post, Clarion India, The Wire, The Hindu, The Indian Express, Siasat
Daily, Scroll.in, Madhyamam, Muslim Mirror, Hindustan Times, India Today, Outlook, Alt News, The
Independent, CNN, Muslim Network TV, and the weekly India Human Rights Monitor published by the Indian
American Muslim Council (IAMC).
Two conventions matter for how this log should be read. First, where the date an incident occurred is confirmed, it is
given as such. Where only the date a video surfaced or a report was published is confirmed, the entry says reported or
surfaced rather than inventing a date of occurrence. Second, several incidents that circulated widely in July actually took
place in May or June; these have been moved to Annex A rather than misfiled into July. This was done deliberately: a
documentation log is only as useful as its dating discipline.
Almost all entries rest on complainant or family testimony, FIRs, or video evidence. Where police dispute a communal motive, that dispute is recorded. Nothing here should be read as a judicial finding.
Structural context for the month
July 2026 sits inside three larger processes that shaped many of the individual incidents below. The first is the Election
Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which by early July had removed close to 60 million
names nationwide; a study by the Kolkata-based Sabar Institute found Muslims made up roughly 70 per cent of the 2.7
million West Bengal voters placed under adjudication. The second is the steady expansion of demolition as an
administrative instrument, reaching mosques on the Rajasthan border, a mazar in Uttarakhand, and for the first time a
functioning university. The third is the formalisation of religious profiling into state policy, most explicitly in Gujarat’s
anti-radicalisation SOP. Individual acts of mob violence in this log are not separable from that institutional backdrop.
